THE HOW
SELF-PUBLISHING?
17% do not self-publish through their micropress.
66% occasionally self-publish.
17% use their micropress solely as a tool to self-publish.
WHO DO YOU PUBLISH?
The Expert Press: "I have published the following with pride: Samuel Andreyev, George Antheil, John Barlow, Daniel f. Bradley, Mark Connery, Marcel Duchamp, Jesse Huisken, Gregory Kalyniuk, Peter Kalyniuk, Katie McGown, Rob Read, Steve Venright."
semi-precious press has published Jill Hartman, Colin Morton, and Johanna Drucker.
Kitsch In Ink: "Steve Venright, Tara Azzopardi, derek beaulieu, Neil Hennessy, bill kennedy, and many others."
above/ground press: "Predominantly, I publish poets from various parts of Canada who catch my interest. Even though I do take submissions, most of what I publish, still, is through solicitation. I have a sort of rough stable in Gil McElroy, derek beaulieu, Andy Weaver, meghan jackson, Lisa Samuels, Meredith Quartermain, Stephanie Bolster, Joe Blades, Matthew Holmes, Jon Paul Fiorentino, and god knows how many others. They're all writers I'm interested in returning to, again and again, to see what they've got going on."
Misprints Press: "That would ruin the fun (referring to Pocket Canon Anonymous Book Series) but some have been first-time authors; some are very established."
Wood & Coal: "I have a book by Rob Read and a book by Kyle Buckley in production."
CLIENTELE AND LOCALE
Most micropresses interviewed cite other small press poets, concretists, zinesters, friends, and literati in cities across Canada as the primary recipients of micropress goodies. A few send their work to Britain, University of Buffalo, New York, and Hawaii.
PUBLISHING ASSISTANCE AND COLLABORATION
Kitsch In Ink: "I've worked with Tara Azzopardi and Jay MillAr, but (I) usually (work) alone."
yardpress: "derek beaulieu (of housepress) has been extremely helpful to have around... Actually, he's the sole source of my guilt for not publishing more frequently. That guy is a machine!"
iloveyougalleries.com: "stephen cain."
housepress: "i have collaborated with semi-precious press, poetic immolation press, above/ground, CrO2, and a tonne of others over the years..."
Misprints Press: "Brian Joseph Davis (hubby) is assistant to the publisher; Colin Geddes did the binding on our last publication though we drove him nuts. Sorry Colin."
above/ground press: "My ex-wife once, before leaving a job, stole a pile of stamps for me. A friend of my sister's used to work at Domtar, and would, every so often, leave a box of 10,000 sheets of blank paper on my doorstep (that was the best, and the oddest, considering he wasn't interested in what I was making). Once, he even left me a box of card stock (that I shared with jwcurry... I mean, what the hell was I going to do with a full box of card stock?). I spent about six years borrowing a friend's photocopier in their Carleton University office (with the agreement I wouldn't say who), taking in my own paper, giving them money for toner + annoyance, and spending ten to twelve hours on a Sunday photocopying issues of STANZAS. Between that, and the fact that my mother bought me a box of paper once, it actually ended up costing me about fifty dollars to produce 750 copies of the 28-page George Bowering issue of STANZAS, #12."
BookThug: "My cohorts are generally the authors."
cold tea press: "No real collaboration, but I'm often inspired by friends who also write/publish and I've participated in a couple organized group trades that serve as motivation. I've always wanted to do more collaborative work or start a literary magazine/journal."
